If you are looking for a plant that brings rugged endurance and architectural charm to your landscape, Crassula cotyledonis, or the Velvet Crassula, is a true mountain-hardy gem. This sturdy succulent forms a low-growing, spreading mound about 6 to 12 inches tall, featuring thick, grey-green leaves covered in a soft, felt-like fuzz that traps moisture and protects it from the elements. It is a sun-lover through and through, performing its best in full sun to partial shade, where the bright light brings out a beautiful stress-coloring on the leaf edges. Because of its unique texture and slightly bitter sap, it is exceptionally animal-resistant, standing its ground against hungry deer and rabbits that often plague softer garden greens. It is the ultimate “plant it and forget it” addition for rock gardens or drought-tolerant borders, offering a silver-hued elegance that stays looking sharp even when the summer heat is at its peak.
