Red Hens and Chicks, also known as Sempervivum tectorum, is a stunning succulent that forms tight rosettes of fleshy, pointed leaves in vibrant shades of red and burgundy. This hardy perennial creates an eye-catching display as the mother plant (hen) produces numerous offsets (chicks) that spread to form an attractive ground cover. Perfect for rock gardens, containers, or as a unique accent in drought-tolerant landscapes.
Red Hens and Chicks are incredibly low-maintenance succulents that thrive on neglect. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Remove dead leaves and spent flower stalks to maintain appearance. These hardy plants can withstand extreme temperatures and are deer resistant. During winter, reduce watering further to prevent root rot.
Plant in spring or early summer in well-draining soil. Choose a location with adequate sunlight and good air circulation. Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow for spreading. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container, being careful not to bury the crown. Water thoroughly after planting, then reduce frequency. For container planting, use a cactus or succulent potting mix.
